English:The Winter Olympics
Imagine living centuries ago and being able to compete in the olympics because of your gender or because of where you live. Moving on in the Modern Olympics timeline, updates are made because of increasing interests. Then, I invite you to take a look at my favorite winter Olympic sport.
Initially when the ancient olympics originated, it was a religious festival with "ancient" rules that allowed a competition among the participants. It all began back in 776 BC on the plain of Olympia in Peloponnesos, Greece amongst their male athletes. Back then they performed in the nude, which lead to an audience mostly of other males, certainly not any married women were allowed to watch such an event, maybe due to respect or possibly insecurities. (enchanted learning) You see, back then Greece was divided into what was known as city-states. Each one pursued their own interests and were often not in agreement with each other, or you may even be as bold as to say they were at war. So as a way to bring peace among the people and honor their god Zeus, the olympics were born. (Matt Christopher) The olympics started with only one event known as a sprint, and as time went on they beefed up their interests and added other things like wrestling, boxing, pentathlon, and equestrian events. The funny thing is, the winner was rewarded with a wreath made of olive branches and they wore it like a crown. (enchanted learning) Overall, in ancient times they found a way to entertain themselves and bring peace all for the glory of their god!
Subsequently came what is known today as the modern Olympics. Due to the perseverance of one French man, the Olympics were reinstated with many improvements. Today the Olympic games occur every four years to attract people from around the world to experience sports, cultural backgrounds, world peace, and good times. The olympics have been held since April 1896 starting in Athens, Greece and are continuing throughout the world.(Haydn Middleton) Finally, it is open to all men to participate in the many olympic events, thus having 245 participants from 14 different countries at the first Modern Olympics event. It wasn't until 1900 in Paris that women were allowed to participate in the tennis and golf events. (Multimedia) Likewise to the ancient games, modern games had awards too. Instead of olive branch crowns, there are gold, silver, and bronze medals used as awards. (Haydn Middleton) Along with awards being presented, records are now kept of theses outstanding performances. So there you have it, persistence pays off!
Consequently, curling is the winter olympic event of my choice. There are many interesting facts that make curling an increasingly popular winter event. First, the name of the event derives from how the players curl their wrists to throw the granite stone, thus known as the curl. Second, it's interesting because of the way a broom can alter the path in front of a 42 pound granite stone. There is a great deal of teamwork that goes into the occurrence of this.(Olympics 2010)The origin of curling is from Scotland where in the winter the townspeople would throw granite rocks with smooth surfaces along the top of the frozen lochs. Scotland is also where the first handles were seen on the stones. (Vancouver 2010) In addition, the country that currently holds the highest standings is Canada with 14 gold medals, 7 silver medals, and 5 bronze metals leading up to an outstanding total of 26 medals.(Yahoo Sports) In my opinion, based on their previous performance, I think Canada will win the next winter Olympics. To sum it all up, the Olympics now capture the attention of many people from around the world. So, what started as Ancient Olympics, only offered to select few, grew to much more than ever thought possible. Today, because of growing interests, the Olympics are offered to athletes from around the world and also because of the various events that have been added. Finally, because of equal opportunities at the Olympics, maybe someday you will see me as a participant in my favorite winter event!Evan Pautz Mrs. Kerr English 1 DATE \@ "dddd, MMMM d, yyyy" Saturday, March 5, 2011
